The lateral forces produced by the crank in a typical Four Cycle Engine, will wear the cylinder unevenly, creating an oval shape whereby gases excape leading to power loss and eventual failure of the engine.

On the other hand the Free Piston Engine has no lateral forces acting upon it. The piston glides inside the cylinder requiring very little lubrication. Wear happens evenly leading to long life. Less friction requires less lubrication. Even though the FPE is a two cycle engine it polutes less than a comparable 2 cycle or even a four cycle engine.

Lateral forces also produce vibration, something which is almost unnoticeable on a FPE.
